Wednesday 23rd September
In the run up to the sporting event of 2026, weather forecasts were consulted on multiple occasions. The weather threatened rain – which if it happened would be our only damp day all week. As Wednesday morning dawned, the tension in the Fileman household mounted as, once again, we consulted both the BBC and Met office weather forecasts. We concluded that “it might rain, or it might not”. Loading the car with scoresheets, umbrellas and multiple coats we set off for the White Hart at Quorn.
By the time we got there, it had not rained.
Soon we were joined by multiple Morgans as DonMog and Sherwood centres started to arrive. Consulting my copious briefing notes and re-drawing my time plan, we opened with a briefing on how the morning was intended to work. The pub was soon inundated with people ordering coffee and recovering from their M1 traffic ordeals in some cases.

At 10:30 prompt, it still had not rained and the competition started.

We played two rounds which, hopefully, gave everyone a chance to get their eye in – as well as plenty of time to chat. By 12:30 (ish) both rounds had completed and I started to analyse the score sheets – quickly concluding that the Sherwood Centre had beaten DonMog by 24 points to 12. This led to the awarding of the Walt Gaskell Trophy to Sherwood. Other awards were also made:
- Best scores of the morning at 20 overall was a tie with Andrew and Liane Dodd tied with Rob & Jo McPherson.
- Runners Up were Graham and Sue Cowland.
- Most Improved were Richard & Jenny Davies
- The Ooh La La Award went to Mike & Karen Pullen.

Every expense had been spared in ensuring that their awards were suitable for the occasion.

After the awards ceremony, we adjourned to the pub where 35 lunches appeared and seemed to be enjoyed by all.
And it then rained – a little.
Thank you to all those who participated and for the good humour and intense competition.
